Introduction to General Translation

Abstract

This book explores general translation in 8 chapters, focusing on the language pair Greek/German. Theoretically and methodologically, the book aligns itself with the functional translational approach of the Skopos Theory that is predominantly grounded in pragmatics and in the awareness of the cultural specificity of the verbal/non-verbal act of communication. <br/><br/> The book intends, first of all, to offer to the translation trainee, the future professional translator, a stable theoretical basis in translation studies, as well as in the particular domain of general translation (chapters 1, 2, 3). A further aim of this book is to make clear, in a contrastive manner, the structural differences between the Greek and the German language, as well as to point out some main particularities relating to this issue (chapter 4), in hope of contributing to the optimization of quality and velocity of the translational out-put in this particular language pair. The theoretical part of the book is followed by a practical one where the students have the opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge of the first four chapters. Moreover, this practical part of the book enables the students to exercise on specific text types that, additionally, are frequently translated in professional real-life. Thus, the text types under examination are cooking recipes, commercials and travel guides and brochures. In this context, every chapter offers 8 translation exercises (4 for each directionality), and, altogether, these practical chapters offer 24 translation exercises (12 for each directionality) (chapters 5,6,7). The difference between (Nord’s) “documentary translation” and “instrumental translation”, as well as the one between “functional translation” and “non-functional translation” is illustrated on the basis of the translation of the introduction of an old Greek cookery book into German (chapter 8). Every chapter of the book and some of its subchapters are followed by a number of questions that aim at fostering comprehension and the critical competence of the student, as well as by a selection of bibliography. The main part of the book is completed with the Conclusions. The book ends with an appendix that includes answers for the questions following every chapter, a suggested solution for one translation exercise (chapter 8), as well as three bilingual and bidirectional term bases (1. cooking recipes, 2. commercials, 3. travel guides and brochures), the complete bibliography and a very detailed index of names and topics. Last but not least, the book makes use of electronic interactive means in order to accelerate and enhance the learning process.

Το βιβλίο έχει εισαγωγικό χαρακτήρα στη γενική μετάφραση, με επίκεντρο το ζεύγος γλωσσών ελλ./γερμ., και αποτελείται από 8 κεφάλαια. Με βάση μια λειτουργική προσέγγιση στη μετάφραση, η οποία στηρίζεται στην πραγματολογία και την επίγνωση της πολιτισμικής εξειδίκευσης της επικοινωνίας μέσω της γλωσσικής πράξης, καθώς και στη Θεωρία του Σκοπού, αποσκοπεί καταρxήν στο να προσφέρει στον εκπαιδευόμενο και μέλλοντα επαγγελματία μεταφραστή ένα στέρεο θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο στην επιστήμη της μετάφρασης και στην ενασχόλησή του με τη γενική μετάφραση (κεφ. 1, 2, 3). Επιπλέον, το βιβλίο επιδιώκει να διασαφηνίσει αντιπαραβολικά τις δομικές ιδιαιτερότητες και διαφορές μεταξύ της ελληνικής και της γερμανικής γλώσσας, έτσι ώστε να βελτιστοποιηθεί τόσο η ποιότητα όσο και η ταχύτητα της μεταφραστικής πράξης στο συγκεκριμένο ζεύγος γλωσσών (κεφ. 4). Πέρα από το θεωρητικό σκέλος αυτό, το βιβλίο επικεντρώνεται στην εφαρμογή των γνώσεων που αποκτήθηκαν, καθώς και στην εξάσκηση των φοιτητών βάσει συγκεκριμένης θεματολογίας, η οποία, μεταξύ των άλλων, συνιστά και συχνή ανάθεση μεταφραστικής εργασίας στον επαγγελματικό βίο του μεταφραστή. Πρόκειται για τα κειμενικά είδη των συνταγών μαγειρικής, διαφημίσεων, ταξιδιωτικών οδηγών και φυλλαδίων. Το πρακτικό σκέλος αυτό θα εστιάζει σε 12 διδακτικές ενότητες στη μετάφραση 12 πρωτότυπων κειμένων από τα ελληνικά στα γερμανικά και αντίστροφα, δηλαδή θα προσφέρει συνολικά 24 μεταφραστικές ασκήσεις (κεφ. 5, 6, 7). Η διαφορά μεταξύ «τεκμηριωτικής μετάφρασης» και «εργαλειακής μετάφρασης», καθώς και μεταξύ «μη λειτουργικής» και «λειτουργικής μετάφρασης» θα διασαφηνιστεί με βάση τη μετάφραση ενός αποσπάσματος (εισαγωγή σε Τσελεμεντέ παλαιότερο) στα γερμανικά (κεφ. 8). Μετά από κάθε κεφάλαιο και μετά από συγκεκριμένα υποκεφάλαια ακολουθούν ερωτήσεις κρίσεως και κατανόησης, καθώς και παρατίθεται και μία επιλογή σχετικής βιβλιογραφίας. Ακολουθούν τα Συμπεράσματα, το Παράρτημα με τις Λύσεις για τις ερωτήσεις κρίσεως και κατανόησης κάθε κεφαλαίου, η προτεινόμενη Λύση για μία πρακτική άσκηση του κεφ. 8. και το Παράρτημα γλωσσαρίων με τρία δίγλωσσα και αμφίδρομα γλωσσάρια (1. μαγειρικής, 2. διαφημιστικών κειμένων, 3. ταξιδιωτικών οδηγών και φυλλαδίων). Το βιβλίο ολοκληρώνεται με τη Βιβλιογραφία και ένα πλήρες ευρετήριο ονομάτων και όρων. Τέλος, όπου θεωρήθηκε χρήσιμο, το βιβλίο συμπεριλαμβάνει και διαδραστικά στοιχεία που υποστηρίζουν και επιταχύνουν τη διαδικασία μάθησης.
