Abstract: |
The subject of the book is the history of women’s education and the contribution of women in the formation of the education system and the cultural, social and ideological transformations within the society. Geographically the book refers to the Greek state and the orthodox communities of the Ottoman Empire for the time period from the 18th to the 20th century. The book consists of two parts: in the first part the construction of the education system for girls/women (pre-school education up to the tertiary education) is presented with the changing historical conditions (political, economical, social, ideological) taken strongly into consideration, while in the second part the educational, social and cultural activity of the literate women and the feminist movements in the Greek-speaking areas are presented and discussed.
