Abstract: |
Elements of the IV A Group, origin, properties, chemical reactions, bonds, uses. Comparison of carbon and silicon. Carbon and its allotropic forms (diamond, graphite, fullerenes). Carbon nano-tubes. Important carbon compounds. Carbon oxides (preparation in industrial scale, Thermodynamic of the oxidation of carbon, Ellingham diagrams). Carbonyls (types, formation based on the different bonds theories, properties, production and uses). Silicon (silicon carbide, silicon nitride, silicones). Germanium (production of pure germanium, physicochemical properties, uses). Techniques for the production of mono-crystals. Tin, lead. Comparison of germanium, tin and lead. Demonstration of the lab exercise:” Sol-gel technique, hydrolysis of a silicon alkoxide and investigation of the produced xerogels”.
