Description:
Abstract:
Preparation, properties, structure, uses of the Group 13 (IIIA) of the Periodic System (Boron Group). Comparison of boron and aluminum (origin, preparation methods, general uses of boron and its compounds). Most important technological boron compounds [boron/nitrogen (boron nitrides, borazon), boron/carbon (boron carbides), boron/metals (metal borides), boron/oxygen (borosilicate glass, boric acid, borax, sodium perborate). Aluminum, properties and uses. Recovery of alumina (aluminum oxide) from bauxites (Bayer process). Minerals, alloys, precious stones, artificial oxides, corrosion of aluminum, preparation of pure aluminum (electrolysis, Hall-Heroult method),most important technological aluminum compounds (alumina, aluminum sulfate, alums, aluminum halides, spinels, polymorphism, isomorphism). Gallium
(preparation of pure gallium, use in semiconductors). Demonstration of the lab exercise: “Preparation of calcium-aluminum compounds using the polymerization method of the initial solutions and microwaves”.
