Description:
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the properties of complement clauses in relation to the subject as well. It considers phenomena that have been at the core of Generative Grammar, and continue to do so with respect to current theorizing. Control and raising, in connection with the +/-finite property of the clause, are the central points around which various proposals are put forward. The Greek data are of particular interest, as these phenomena take in place in finite, as opposed to non-finite, contexts. This chapter has a higher degree of difficulty, since it requires a good understanding of the theory and its application on new data, which independently challenge current theoretical approaches. The chapter consists of four basic sections. Section one introduces the features of C and the properties of complement clauses. Section two focuses on the subject of infinitives and the Case it receives; the discussion is based on English. Section three considers the Greek data with respect to control and raising. Section four discusses the extended projections of C. The main sections are followed by a summary, suggestions for further reading, bibliography and indicative exercises.
