Η ανθρωπολογία, η κοινωνιολογία και άλλοι επιστημονικοί κλάδοι επιχειρούν να ερμηνεύσουν τη διατροφική συμπεριφορά, στο ατομικό και στο συλλογικό επίπεδο. Στο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζονται οι κυριότερες από τις θεωρητικές προσεγγίσεις για την ερμηνεία της τροφικής επιλογής, τόσο αυτές που εστιάζουν στο συμβολικό ρόλο της τροφής και τη σημασία του για κοινωνική συνοχή, όσο και εκείνες που προκρίνουν την αλληλεπίδραση ανάμεσα στους περιβαλλοντικούς περιορισμούς και τον πολιτισμό.
