ISSUES IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE

Abstract

Issues concerning the library and information science field are presented in the book, taking into consideration basic principles of librarianship and documentation, historical developments as well as the current trends under the influence of information and communication technologies. The main purpose is to contribute to understanding of techniques and technologies used to effective organization of information in libraries and other information centres. <br/><br/>

Issues on processing, organization and management of information and data are presented in the book, taking into consideration existing situation as well as current approaches, trends and practices in the field, in Greece and everywhere in the world. Particularly, there are described issues like cataloging and description of documents (AACR2, FRBR, RDA), metadata (with emphasis on Dublin Core), subject analysis and indexing, classification, subject headings, thesauri, modern knowledge organization systems (ontologies, taxonomies, topic maps). Each chapter is followed by related bibliography, as well as indicative questions and exercises with their solutions, while the book also contains a table of abbreviations and acronyms and a greek-english glossary of terms.

Το βιβλίο παρέχει μια σφαιρική παρουσίαση των ζητημάτων που αφορούν το πεδίο της επιστήμης των πληροφοριών, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη τις βασικές αρχές βιβλιοθηκονομίας και τεκμηρίωσης, τις διαδρομές στο πέρασμα των χρόνων και τις σύγχρονες εξελίξεις με την επίδραση των τεχνολογιών πληροφοριών και επικοινωνιών. Βασικός σκοπός του είναι να συντελέσει στην κατανόηση των τεχνικών και των τεχνολογιών που χρησιμοποιούνται για την αποτελεσματική οργάνωση των πληροφοριών στις βιβλιοθήκες και τα λοιπά κέντρα πληροφόρησης.<br/><br/>

Το βιβλίο αναφέρεται στα ζητήματα επεξεργασίας, οργάνωσης και διαχείρισης πληροφοριών και δεδομένων, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη την υπάρχουσα κατάσταση και τις σύγχρονες αντιλήψεις και πρακτικές στο σχετικό τομέα, τόσο στην Ελλάδα όσο και διεθνώς. Συγκεκριμένα, στο βιβλίο αναπτύσσονται ζητήματα όπως καταλογογράφηση και περιγραφή τεκμηρίων (AACR2, FRBR, RDA), μεταδεδομένα (με ειδική αναφορά στο Dublin Core), θεματική ανάλυση και ευρετηρίαση, ταξινόμηση, θεματικές επικεφαλίδες, θησαυροί, σύγχρονα συστήματα οργάνωσης της γνώσης (οντολογίες, ταξινομίες, χάρτες θεμάτων). Κάθε κεφάλαιο συνοδεύεται από σχετική βιβλιογραφία, καθώς και ενδεικτικές ερωτήσεις και ασκήσεις με τις αντίστοιχες απαντήσεις και λύσεις τους, ενώ στο βιβλίο περιέχεται επίσης πίνακας συντομεύσεων και ακρωνύμων, καθώς και γλωσσάριο όρων στην ελληνική και αγγλική.
