Abstract:
This chapter presents and analyzes the macroeconomic performance of the Greek economy during the period 1995-2009. Noted the critical role of the banking system, the growth of credit to the economy and strengthening demand especially in view of the adoption of the single currency. Highlighted critical problems in the structure of the economy which over the years, along with social and political factors led the Greek economy into a standard "borowing growth" without enhancing national competitiveness. The accumulated problems especially in the period after 2004, are presented in key indicators such as the current account balance, inflation, fiscal deficit and debt but also the structural deficits of the economy.
